reflection...

I have been listening to South Carolina-A History. This is a mass publication of South Carolina history. It started all the way back at the time of Columbus discovery of America and ended in 1997. My family all thought me missing a few marbles for listening to such a boring thing! ha ha! At least my little brother got quite irrate about it several times when I was listening to it w/in their hearing. But dispite of all the opposition i was receiving i continued to listen. THis narrative opened my eyes in many ways to the reason SC is the way it is at this point. At one point in time SC was the richest colony/state on the east coast. Pretty much the first 100 years SC was at it's peak. All because the horrible institution of slavery. After the Revolutionary War the economy of SC was still good but nothing like it had been before the War. During the Civil War SC became a poverished state and has been working it's way out of poverty ever since. In fact the whole state continues to have a below average income then the average of the nation in general. This explains a lot of things to me! And i find myself living in a area of the state that has a below average state income! :-)Isn't it a wonder then that i can drive down the road and see houses that look much like they may have in the 50's and 60's....isn't it a wonder then that everybody from Colored to White seems to be scripping all the time....especially in these last few years?! What can we do to help this?

Contentment and good old honest labor. It didn't take the colonists very long to discover the dignity of industry at the beginning of our great nation. I still think that given enough hardship American will do what she's always done and roll up her sleeves and support herself. The government would do well to step out of her way.
yes, and also the colonist forced their Black slaves to work...now it seems there are those people who would like to just eat off the government because they "owe it to us"....I am not being passive in anyway as to what i'm saying here...i just happened to enjoy the story and see why we are where we are today. Now i want to listen to all the states stories just like that! it would take me several years to wade thru it all though so i guess i'll not get started! :-)

in the mean time i will do my part to be a light in the community where i'm placed at this time in my life and hopefully somebody will see some Light thru me....
