This winter has been an amazing one to me...definitely do not have to guess at whether we actually have winter here this time around! :-) After a majorly mild winter last year this one has been a doozy... I was trying to think back to when it got cold here and I can't really remember but I do know it was freezing on Christmas Day. Ryan's were here in October and it was chilly then already. And by December we were having January weather already. So....January rolls around and we get a taste of the Artic's weather! :-) Somehow the NorthPole thought to share her weather very far south this time around! haha! The first of January we had Days of mornings in the teens.
Sometimes in the barn I think of random stuff...and one day I decided that if it was gonna be so cold it sure would be nice to have a little white stuff w/ it...but didn't really think it would happen! but happen it did! 3 weeks ago tonight it started freezing rain and sleeting some and by morning When I got up to go to the barn we had a nice covering of white fluffy snow....Nothing like you Northern Wisconsinite's 5 ft or anything...but 1 inch was enough to cover the roads and put a stop to life for a day...it was like Christmas day all over again. it was beautiful...even smelled right! and the amazing stillness was soothing to the soul.... We thought that was Winters final hurrah....well, were we ever wrong!!!!
This past Monday the weather was absolutely charming....up to the 70's I'd say and Ryan and Kendra were able to go enjoy a lovely warm day in Savannah. But Tuesday it started raining and it was a COLD rain...the kind that sinks in and doesn't go away....the kind that will send you scurrying North to the cold dry snow....By the next morning when I went to the barn that time...it was starting to freeze enough to the trees to again have that muffled sound....it was even worse when I came home from the barn....and it just kept raining and freezing....by 9ish it had started the sleet and rain together kind of....and it did that pretty much all morning/day.....we were just waiting for the lights to go and sure enough they went at 10:30 am....out....dead....never to return till about 3 days later.
We have plantation pines surrounding us so all day long there was the sound of gunshots ringing around us and soon the air was permeated w/ the luxurious smell of fresh pine sap! it was a wonderful smell....but we knew a dangerous one! I went out to the road (which was pretty much deserted) and looked closely at it and there was probably a good inch of slush! yuck! There was a Civil Law Emergency out for the state of SC. Which means we technically we not to be on the roads unless in dire straights....
Mom made Cheeseburger soup on the grill under an umbrella for lunch...and for supper they cooked potatoes, and zipper peas and grilled the meat all on the grill....by that time dad had resurrected a generator and we had lights and some warmth at Dad's. So we enjoyed an early Valentine's Supper in the half light (generator isn't very powerful) and then after the evening was over Ryan and Kendra and I went back to a 57* house for the night. We got an extra double knit cover off mom so that we all could be warm! By morning it was 53 in the house....but we were snug and warm with as much on top of us as under probably! :-) I think I had 4 layers!
Ryan and Kendra and I went to Uncle Gary's for Showers and warmth as they have a generator to run their whole house...actually it was powering the house, barn and shop. Even her Washing Machine worked! After the warm shower and a lovely breakfast we decided to ride around and take pictures some. It was just amazing to see all the damage that 1/2 to 1 inch of inch accumulated on tree branches and power lines can do!

Our power came back on Friday afternoon....It went off a time or so after that but it has been on pretty much since....There are still people who do not have lights in their houses unless they have access to a generator...in fact some people have theirs out on loan to others.....And there are even a few new Generators in the community....some of the farmers were milking after the rest of us were done....which means some had to be dun after supper!
Life pretty much stopped last week for some of us....for others it got crazy....but it was an interesting week in all! topped off w/ a small earthquake late Friday night.
Today the sun shines brightly and it smells and feels like spring...we were discussing it at lunch and even tho it was as cold this morning as some others it was obviously had a spring feel to it! there is just a difference between spring cold and winter cold! today it's a spring cold....who knows...tomorrow it might be a winter cold...but for today we will enjoy the spring cold! :-) I need to get my Peas in the ground!
